Video marketing and why it is relevant in 2015

So what’s the big deal about digital marketing anyway, and why is it leaving traditional marketing in the proverbial dust?

To understand this, it’s important to start with the realisation that we live in a world where change happens at a rapid rate. Everything evolves and will keep on evolving. Slow dial-up internet has evolved into fast broadband/wifi. Vinyl records have morphed into CD’s. CD’s are now stored on small mobile flash drives, or our mobile phones and online streaming services are set to replace our vast catalogues of music completely.

Evolution is inevitable, and it has certainly happened with traditional marketing methods. Digital marketing is about thinking local, but acting global with potential global benefits to your business.

Traditional marketing methods include; billboards, newspaper adverts, flyers, radio and television if your budget can stretch that far. Digital marketing on the other hand includes, among the many methods available, social media marketing, email marketing, search engine optimisation (SEO) and content marketing (blogs, promotions etc.)

One of the main benefits of focusing on digital marketing methods is cost. Traditionally the cost of print adverts, radio and television are very high, whereas online there are many relatively low cost options such as the various social media platforms which have potentially a global reach, and are in most cases free.

Tracking your progress is also easier when done online. It also gives greater perspective as to when, where and how many times your product has been viewed. This will help in tailoring and targeting your marketing for maximum benefit.

There is no doubt that business, and indeed the world is moving towards a paperless society entrenched in the online and digital realms. Leading the online marketing space is Video Marketing which is growing rapidly and should be considered a vital tool for the growth of your company.

Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, the largest social media channels in the world have all recently created video sharing features. These companies are well aware that online video is the future of content marketing and if they are making big moves in that direction then so should your company.

Here are five statistics pertaining to this this phenomenal video viewing trend:

  1. In July 2014, Facebook announced that video views exceeded 1 billion EACH DAY. (That’s more than YouTube in the U.S) (Facebook)
  2. 74% of all internet traffic in 2017 will be by video. (syndacast)
  3. Website visitors are 64% more likely to buy a product after watching a video about it. (comScore)
  4. An introductory company email that includes a video enjoys a 96% increase in click-through rate. (Forrester Research)
  5. 93% of marketers use video for online marketing, sales and communication. (syndacast)

Takeaway question: Would you rather watch a punchy 2-3 minute video or read an 8-page document giving you the same information?

Perhaps this example would convince you.

In 2013 fireman Cory Kalanick attached his GoPro high-definition personal cameras to his helmet while going into a building. Inside he found an unconscious kitten and quickly brought it out to revive try and revive it.

This was all captured using his GoPro camera. He uploaded the video it to his own YouTube account and it garnered 1.5 million views.

GoPro themselves got wind of this, re-edited the video, named it « Fireman saves kitten », added their logo and posted it on their own online channel. The video, which demonstrates their product in action and shows how a memorable moment was captured has since received over 26 million views worldwide.

The world took note, GoPro’s brand became known and their product was connected to a selfless act of bravery and kindness. A two minute clip took them from a small start up to the global brand they are today.
