Telstra currently offers its customers who connect to home broadband unmetered access to Presto. But many analysts have tipped Netflix will become the No.1 SVOD operator in Australia and Telstra may look to forge new partnerships to cement its dominant position.
The surge in Netflix usage came after some ISPs, including iiNet and Optus, signed unmetering deals with Netflix, which means viewing the service is excluded from monthly data allowances.
Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings has since told its shareholders it has regretted that decision.
« In Australia, we recently sought to protect our new members from data caps by participating in ISP programs that, while common in Australia, effectively condone discrimination among video services – some capped, some not, » Mr Hastings told shareholders.
« We should have avoided that and will avoid it going forward. »
