Telstra said that it intends to work with a number of providers to be able to offer a range of content to its customers.

« For example, we are currently in discussions with Stan about a promotional offer to a limited number of Telstra customers, » a spokesperson for Telstra said.

The telco has 3 million retail fixed broadband customers and 16.4 million mobile subscribers.

Telstra would not comment on the details of the discussions so it is not known which customers would be eligible for the offer.

Stan said part of its strategy was to engage with internet service providers to be able to offer its service to more people.

« As part of this strategy we will have a special promotion to a selection of Telstra customers in the coming weeks, » a Stan spokesperson said.

Similar deals have involved unmetered data when using a particular streaming service and free subscriptions for a limited period.

Stan lodged a notification of exclusive dealing to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission in February.

ACCC chairman Rod Sims told Fairfax Media the watchdog was assessing the proposal and at this stage there aren’t many concerns about competition.

« At the moment we can’t see any competitive detriment, but we’ll certainly be looking because the link that Telstra has through Foxtel could cause concerns, but we haven’t seen any yet. » 

Mr Sims said the fact that Telstra is a 50 per cent stakeholder in Foxtel, which is part owner of the rival streaming service Presto, makes a deal between Stan and Telstra less concerning.

 « If Presto sought to leverage its relationship with Telstra that excluded other players, that might be a concern. But so far we’re not seeing anything that’s trying to exclude anybody, we’re just seeing discounts being offered on different bases, » Mr Sims said.

« If it’s just the three SVoD [subscription video on-demand] players positioning, it’s hard to see a competition concern at this stage. »

Telstra will also offer Foxtel and Seven’s Presto service unmetered to Foxtel broadband and its own broadband customers. New and renewing Telstra mobile customers will be offered a three-month free Presto subscription.

Stan has also signed a deal with Vodafone. While details of the partnership are not yet known it is believed it would entail some customers receiving free or discounted access to Stan.

Netflix, due to launch in Australia on March 24, has signed deals with Optus, which will give customers a free six-month subscription and will offer unmetered streaming to home broadband customers. Netflix has signed a similar deal with iiNet.

Netflix will also be available on Fetch, sold by Optus, iiNet and M2.
